The Forest Pool
about
Below a great canopy of trees, a light rustling can be heard, the snapping of twigs and two voices muffled by the foliage. Yuri and Lyaru’s argument seems to fragment into the gloom like a puff of smoke. The two travellers have walked for hours; they are exhausted, hungry, covered in bites, and both need a well-deserved break from their companion.
Succumbing to thirst, Yuri sets off into the trees to look for water. Taking little notice of Lyaru’s warnings to not stray far from their camp, Yuri soon blunders through the undergrowth, lost and utterly alone. For hours, he moves through the trees, the eyes of the forest upon him, the noises of snapped branches underfoot answered by unfamiliar cries of beasts in the darkness. After what seems like an age, Yuri finally sees a patch of light ahead - a clearing no less - and the unmistakable sound of running water.
There, through the trees, a dim shaft of light illuminating the clearing, stands an empty glass dome on a weathered stone plinth. With caution Yuri approaches, ever more aware that the sounds of the forest have faded into an eerie, deafening silence, save for a light trickle from the forest pool that shimmers in the glow from the canopy above. Yuri’s hand warily moves towards the plinth, and the dome suddenly fills with light, revealing a city he knows.
Smoke rises from Toierra, flashes and terror over the home of his friends, an eye watching over the destruction. Yuri’s hands are white against the glass, the dome’s scene fades, and a room as vivid as any he has ever seen emerges from the darkness. A woman’s sob fills his ears, her hands clasped over her face. The bed she sits on creaks ever so slightly as she rocks gently back and forth, her shadow dancing in the light of a lamp on a nightstand. Her shadow stands up, and Yuri’s joins her to embrace in the realm of darkness. The woman’s cries muffle as she looks up straight at Yuri, her eyes soft and longing, a knowing look on her face. The barriers of time and space open for just a fraction of a moment. Recognition sparks in her eyes as a deep, sonorous voice breaks the illusion and the dome fades back into nothingness. Staring into the gloom, Yuri turns to see two sets of cunning eyes staring back at him. With trepidation and still shaking from the vision Yuri can sense that these creatures have seen what he has.
